MELBOURNE, Jan. 21 (Xinhua) -- China's Zhang Shuai and her mixed doubles partner Rohan Bopanna of India were knocked out of the Australian Open in the quarterfinals on Tuesday night.

Zhang and Bopanna were beaten by local hopes Olivia Gadecki and John Peers in a third-set super tiebreak.

Gadecki and Peers, who were wildcard entrants into the tournament, triumphed 2-6, 6-4, 11-9 in just over one hour.

Zhang and Bopanna had a match point leading 9-8 in the tiebreak of the third set, but could not return a wide serve from Peers.

Peers, a two-time doubles Grand Slam champion, followed up that serve with an ace for a 10-9 lead and a match point that was converted when a volley from Zhang went long.

Zhang and Bopanna trailed 5-7 in the decisive tiebreak before winning four of the next five points, starting with a forehand winner down the line from Zhang.

However, as they did after losing the first set, the Australian pair again flipped the momentum to advance to the semifinals.

"I knew if we hung around long enough hopefully it would turn our way," Peers said. "Whether we like it or not, you have to win the last point, not the first point."

Gadecki and Peers will face second-seeded New Zealanders Erin Routliffe and Michael Venus in the semifinals.

Zhang will play her women's doubles quarterfinal with Kristina Mladenovic against top seeds Taylor Townsend and Katerina Siniakova on Wednesday.
