Mogherini says EU backs strikes on Syria, reiterates political solution

BRUSSELS, April 14 (Xinhua) -- The European Union (EU) is supportive of U.S.-led airstrikes on Syria as its objective is to prevent further use of chemical weapons, EU foreign policy chief Federica Mogherini said in a statement Saturday.

She alleged that the strikes have been "taken with the sole objective to prevent further use of chemical weapons and chemical substances as weapons by the Syrian regime."

She proclaimed that the EU "is supportive of all efforts aimed at the prevention of the use of chemical weapons."

Mogherini, however, reiterated the EU's position that there can be no other solution to the Syrian conflict than political.

"We have a common goal in preventing any escalation of violence that could transform the Syrian crisis into a wider regional confrontation, with incalculable consequences for the Middle East and indeed the whole world," she said.

Earlier on Saturday, a statement of her boss, European Commission President Jean-Claude Juncker, avoided commenting directly on the U.S.-led strike on Syria, only condemning "in the strongest terms" the use of chemical weapons.
