NEW DELHI, Sept. 26 (Xinhua) -- India's maiden Mars mission has spent four years in space, the state-owned space agency said on Tuesday.

Indian Space Research Organization (ISRO) launched the country's first interplanetary mission -- Mars mission, nicknamed Mangalyaan -- in November 2013 and it was successfully placed in the Red Planet's orbit in September 2014.

Touted to be the world's cheapest space mission, the mission was estimated to last for just six months.

"(But) It's been 4 years since I am around! Thank you for your love and support," the ISRO's Mars Orbiter handle tweeted Tuesday.

Since its inception, the Mars mission has been taking spectacular photos of the Red Planet's surface, including mountains and volcanoes, and sending them back to Earth. The photos included that of Olympus Mons, the largest volcano of the solar system.
