LUSAKA, Jan. 29 (Xinhua) -- Latest figures about road traffic fatalities in Zambia last year suggest that the country is still far from attaining the United Nations (UN) target of reducing road fatalities by 50 percent, an advocacy group said on Monday.

Figures released by Zambian police last week showed that 1, 817 people died in 30, 652 road traffic accidents in the southern African country in 2018.

The Zambia Road Safety Trust, an organization that promotes road safety, said the figures suggest that the country has a lot of work to do to reduce road carnages.

Road safety and healthier transportation modes should top the political agenda if the country is to make any meaningful strides towards attaining the UN target of reducing road traffic fatalities, said Daniel Mwamba, the organization's chairperson.
